Scholarship Announcement - Civil Society Leadership Awards

Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) is pleased to announce a competition for the Civil Society Leadership Awards for an LL.M programme in Public International Law and Human Rights. 5 full Scholarships are on offer at RGSL to applicants from the following countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Laos, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. All teaching is conducted in English.


The Civil Society Leadership Awards (CSLA) provides fully funded master’s level scholarships at a network of universities across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The program aims to support individuals who demonstrate both academic and professional excellence and have potential to become civil society leaders in their home communities.

5 full Scholarships are on offer at RGSL to applicants from the following countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Laos, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. All teaching is conducted in English.

Successful applicants will receive the following support for studies at RGSL:

Tuition and mandatory university fees
Monthly stipend for room, board, and other living expenses
Program-related travel
Accident and sickness insurance during the program
Funds for educational materials
Possible internship support
The scholarship does NOT provide funding for dependent family members.

Eligibility

1) Applicants must satisfy standard RGSL entry requirements with respect to educational background and English proficiency. Scholarships are available to individuals with bachelor’s or master’s degree in law or related fields (or will be awarded a degree prior to admission to the programme), obtained in at least four years long studies.

2) Scholarships are available to individuals who in the future want actively contribute to the civil society development of their home countries. Applicants must indicate current place of employment and specify the applicant’s future plans to contribute to the development of civil society in the home country after completing the LL.M programme.

NOTE: a) two reference letters must be attached; b) requirement of processing fee does not apply

3) After submitting an application to the RGSL, applicants should register with CSLA directly at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Z5ZXJB9.

4) Applications will be reviewed by the RGSL and representatives of CSLA.

5) Applicants will be notified of the following: a) admitted to the RGSL with CSLA funding; b) admitted to the RGSL without CSLA funding; c) not admitted to the RGSL and therefore not eligible for CSLA funding.

Selection Process

Criteria for selection will include academic merit and potential for contributing to the development of civil society in the countries listed. Those candidates shortlisted for admission may be interviewed online or in person by a selection committee, and may be asked to provide additional essays regarding their career goals.

Programme description

The competitive and prestigious Public International Law and Human Rights (LL.M) programme is aimed at students interested in working with international public law issues, including human rights, in a national or international environment. It offers in-depth studies in fundamental issues of public international law and human rights law, the interaction between the two areas of law, and in their current trends of development. The 2014/2015 Programme starts on 3 September 2014.
